The F54, F55 and F56 categories are for wheelchair athletes who throw from a seated position. F56 athlete Angela Madsen (USA) threw 9.43 metres in Windsor, Canada, on 14 July 2012. F55 athlete Marianne Buggenhagen (Germany) produced a throw of 9.06 metres at the Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece, on 19 September 2004, and F54 athlete Liwan Yang (China) threw 7.50 metres to win Paralympic gold in London, UK, on 1 September 2012.
At the Paralympic Games in London on 1 September 2012, Yang won the gold medal with a throw of 7.50 metres, with Buggenhagen (8.32 metres) and Madsen (8.88 metres) in the silver and bronze medal positions after the distances had been re-calculated to take into account the level of impairment.
In addition to Yang and Buggenhagen's world records, which were both set at the Paralympic Games, the Paralympic record for the F56 class is Angela Madsen's 8.88 metres, as stated above.
