In 2001, Whitney Houston (USA, 1963–2012) became the first winner of the BET (Black Entertainment Television) Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of a "veteran artist or group who has made notable contributions to the music industry". The award has since been won by the likes of James Brown (2003), Diana Ross (2007) and Prince (2010).
The annual BET Awards were established in 2001 to celebrate African-Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports and other fields of entertainment.
