Helicopters can be carried on many vessels but there are few classes of ship that cater for them in force. Ships that do are either helicopter carriers, such as the Royal Navy’s HMS Illustrious and HMS Ocean, or amphibious assault ships, which can either carry large helicopter forces or an air wing made up of fighters and assault helicopters. The largest ships in this role currently in service, by tonnage and helicopter capacity, are those of the US Wasp Class, such as the USS Boxer, of which eight are currently in service. If not carrying fixed wing aircraft they can carry up to 42 CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters or 22 MV-22 Osprey aircraft.
