The longest-lived species of armadillo is the La Plata three-banded armadillo Tolypeutes matacus. Native to northern Argentina, southwestern Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia, a female specimen of this species with an estimated age of 3 years old was acquired by Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago, Illinois, USA, in 1971, and died there in 2005, by which time it was 36.8 years old.
