Temperate deciduous forests are those that lose their leaves each year and receive an average of 30–60 inches of rainfall annually. Their occurrence includes the eastern USA, New Zealand and eastern China, but the largest example extends for about 1,900 mi (3,057 km) north along the Pacific coast of North America, from San Francisco Bay to Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska. Its total area is approximately 17,873,700 sq km (6,901,074 sq mi).
