Homunculi were living human-like entities reputedly created during medieval times by alchemists from various organic secretions and other biological substances as well as from certain mystical elements such as "the arcanum of human blood". They were usually very small, but the largest on record measured roughly 30 cm tall. Eight in number, these were allegedly created during the late 16th century by Count Johann Ferdinand von Kufstein and Abbé Geloni, and were apparently viewed by several very notable personages of that time, including Count Franz Josef von Thun and Count Max Lamberg. Like all homunculi, each was maintained in its own sealed glass jar, because such entities would die if exposed to air. One of them allegedly escaped when its jar was accidentally broken, but it died at once, and its remains were said to have been buried somewhere in the grounds of Kufstein's Tyrolean residence.
