The Thomas Edison Memorial Tower was built in 1937 to mark the site of Edison's laboratory in the Menlo Park section of what is now the town of Edison. The laboratory saw the birth of recorded sound as well as the humble light bulb. The light bulb on top of the memorial is 13 feet (3.96 m) tall, weighs eight tons, and is illuminated at night.
