According to the IQAir 2020 World Air Quality Report, the city with the worst air quality is Hotan, China, which has an average PM2.5 particulate pollution level of 110.2 μg/m³. This is more than 10 times the levels recommended by the World Health Organization.
The poor air quality in Hotan is primarily caused by the frequent dust storms that blow in off the Taklamakan Desert, though poorly regulated heavy industry is also a factor.
