In January 2012, Australian scientists announced that the world's first hybrid sharks had been recorded, in waters off Queensland, Australia. Resulting from interbreeding between the Australian black-tip shark Carcharhinus tilstoni and the common black-tip shark C. limbatus, these hybrids represent several generations of interbreeding. Whereas the Australian black-tip can only exist in tropical waters, its hybrid progeny occur in much cooler, temperate seas – thereby expanding the geographical distribution of genes originating from the Australian species.
