The Kolyma Highway (M56) in Russia passes through some of the coldest inhabited places on Earth. The road is 2,031 km (1,262 miles) long and goes from Nizhny Bestyakh in the west to Magadan in the East. The section between Khandyga and Magadan is often referred to as the "Road of Bones"; the bones of prisoners from the Sewostlag Labour Camp who died constructing the road are buried beneath the road. The road is regarded as a memorial to these souls. One town bordering the road is Oymyakon, whose average January temperature is -46 celsius. Records as low as -67.7 celsius have been verified, making this the coldest road on Earth.
