Mother India’s Crochet Queens (MICQ), a global community of passionate crochet enthusiasts, have been hard at work creating intricate crochet artwork while also breaking records!

Founded by Subashri Natarajan, the organization has achieved multiple Guinness World Records titles, each a tribute to the craftsmanship and creativity.

The organization participants, affectionately known as Queens, use their passionate skills to express themselves while being part of something historic.

For MICQ, crocheting is a form of connecting people across borders and preserving traditional handiwork while making a social impact.

Through a global network of passionate volunteers and contributors, MICQ has gathered thousands of handmade crochet pieces for their record titles.

The crochet pieces are sourced through social media, workshops and community events used to spread the word.

Although now broken, their first venture into record breaking was with the largest crochet blanket measuring an enormous 11,148.5 m² (120,001 ft² 72 in²)  in 2016.

Below is a list of their current records.

Largest display of crochet sculptures

In 2018, MICQ created the largest display of crochet sculptures, featuring an impressive 58,917 handmade pieces made all donated by volunteers.

The colourful display consisted of crochet pieces of figures, flowers and food.

Some crocheted figures are dressed in traditional attire, reflecting Indian culture and customs.

On World Cancer Day 2024, MICQ attempted the largest display of crochet scarves with 4,517 scarves.

All the scarves were crocheted in symbolic shades of pink to build awareness towards various types of cancers.

The scarves were later donated to members of the public, adding a further charitable touch.

Largest display of crocheted Christmas decorations

Bringing a festive spirit to the next attempt, MICQ broke the largest display of crocheted Christmas decorations.

A total of 66,158 crochet items made up the display, showing different aspects of Christ’s life and decoration items generally used at Christmas.

This time, the handmade creations turned into ornaments, bells, stars, and Christmas trees and forming a magical display.

Largest display of crochet squares

MICQ’s latest attempt in March this year was the largest display of crochet squares.

This time, the Queens went much bigger, displaying 100,581 crochet squares.

The crochet squares at the event will be used to create scarves, ponchos and other wearables distributed and donated.

Subashri hopes that with these records, the public will see crochet as more than just a craft and how passion and teamwork can achieve something extraordinary.

Crochet is more than a craft — it’s a symbol of unity, creativity, and perseverance. Breaking Guinness World Records titles showcases the power of teamwork and passion. Every stitch tells a story, and together, we are creating history, inspiring generations, and proving that handmade art can achieve extraordinary milestones.” - Subashri Natarajan, Founder of Mother India’s Crochet Queens (MICQ)
