On 8 July, The National Federation of the Blind (USA), the largest organisation of blind people in the US, celebrated its 75th anniversary with a successful Guinness World Records title attempt for the Largest umbrella mosaic.

An incredible 2,480 members and supporters of NFB gathered in the car park of the Rosen Centre Hotel in Orlando, Florida.

They then went on to simultaneously open their brollies and create a mosaic which depicted the NFB logo and tagline – “Live the life you want”.

The record-breaking group significantly exceeded the number of umbrellas they needed in order to beat PT Philips (Indonesia), which achieved the record in August 2012 with 2,170 participants.

The mosaic was an inspiring symbol for the blind participants, though for others it made a spectacular sight.

Speaking movingly at the event, Mark A. Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said:

“Today, our members and supporters have achieved the official Guinness World Records title for the largest umbrella mosaic, demonstrating to the Orlando community and to the world that blindness does not define us and that our capacity to achieve great things is limited only by our imagination.

“We thank the Rosen Centre Hotel for hosting this event, the Orlando community for embracing it, and Guinness World Records for certifying its success.”
