The BMW Berlin Marathon 2025 marks the 51st edition of the iconic long-distance race, as well as the seventh consecutive collaboration with Guinness World Records.

This year too, despite the uncharacteristically hot weather, elite runners and sports enthusiasts gathered in Germany from all corners of the world to put their training to the test and seize a coveted Guinness World Records title.

A total of five records were broken during the weekend: one during the inline skating event on Saturday and four during the traditional marathon on Sunday, 21 September.

But marathons are no easy feat, and today the weather added an extra challenge for many runners.

Like other countries in Central Europe, Germany experienced a short but intense Heat Dome over the weekend. Daytime temperatures soared 15 °C above the seasonal average, making it harder to achieve personal bests.

However, many decided to test their endurance and tackle the challenge despite the heatwave.

Food content creator Oli Paterson was among them, attempting to break the record as the fastest marathon dressed as a chef (male).

“These things are no joke!” the cooking pro commented after the race.

Canadian record holder Jani Barré also attempted to improve her existing title for the fastest marathon in a non-racing wheelchair (female). Although she sadly didn’t manage to break a record today, Jani recently improved her own record title: last March, she bettered her previous result by 18 minutes!

Meanwhile, 20-year-old athlete James Redding left an indelible mark in marathon history as the youngest person to complete the six World Marathon Majors (male).

As per tradition, Official Guinness World Records Adjudicator Lena Kuhlmann was waiting at the finish line to welcome the runners and verify the new record titles.

"It’s been great to adjudicate at this year’s BMW Berlin Marathon," said Lena.

"It’s always amazing to see the excitement for record-breaking from participants and spectators alike."

The first Guinness World Records runner to cross the finish line was Peter Johnston (United Kingdom).

In Berlin, Peter merged his everyday job as a head teacher with his passion for long-distance running to achieve the fastest marathon dressed as an academic (male): he powered through the race in a traditional teacher costume, finishing with an impressive result of 03:31:30.

He was followed closely by the second record holder of the day, Frederik Bungert.

The athlete ran the fastest marathon dressed as a barrister, crossing the finish line with a record-smashing time of 03:35:55 and snatching the world record from fellow Berlin Marathon runner Jochen Glasbrenner (Germany).

Jochen broke the previous record during the BMW Berlin Marathon 2023, finishing in just over three hours and 41 minutes.

A seasoned marathon runner, enthusiastic inline skater and multiple record holder, Jochen is not new to record-breaking: during last year’s Berlin Marathon, he smashed the record for fastest marathon dressed as a mobile phone (male) and the fastest inline skating marathon in a suit (male).

This year, he returned to Berlin and added two new record titles to his outstanding array of achievements, tackling the traditional marathon dressed as a can and completing the fastest marathon dressed as a can (male).

He also broke a record during the inline skating marathon on Saturday, achieving the fastest inline skating marathon wearing lederhosen (male). The record holder sprinted through the race and finished in just one hour, 24 minutes and 11 seconds.

The inline skating marathon has been an unmissable appointment for skaters since 1997 and marks the final event in the World Inline Cup, rallying sports enthusiasts from all corners of the world.
