A spectacular drone show broke a world record as it lit up the sky above Chongqing, China.

A total of 11,787 drones created the largest aerial image formed by multirotor/drones, earning Chongqing Broadcasting Media Group Co., Ltd. and Shenzhen DAMODA Intelligent Control Technology Co., Ltd. (both China) a spot in the record books.

Taking place on 16 June, the show was intended as a tribute to the 28th anniversary of Chongqing's establishment as China's fourth municipality.

The companies who teamed up to create the record-breaking display wanted to present Chongqing's progress to the world and promote its integration of the low-altitude economy and cultural tourism industry.

The drone show was so large that two Guinness World Records Adjudicators were needed on-site to oversee everything.

They can be seen in our video walking down the line of drones, all laid out on the ground and ready for their moment to shine in the sky.

The scene was truly something to behold as the thousands of drones lifted up and moved in to position over the river.

Images of leaping dolphins, a gigantic tree, mountains, and more were formed in the sky, creating a wonderous spectacle for any onlookers.

The drone show must have been visible for miles around due to its enormous scale.

A city landscape that looked to be life-size formed out of nowhere as the drones danced around to take position.

A character of a young girl with pigtails also appeared in the sky, happy and waving at anyone looking her way.

Even when the show was over, the sight of all the drones returning to land was a beautiful one.
