Water, in different forms and at different temperatures, is known to have therapeutic qualities. It is thus no surprise that so many of our record breakers have claimed Guinness World Records titles underwater, where they probably feel the calmest despite attempting challenging activities.

Here is a list of some of the most wonderfully astonishing records broken underwater. From weddings to walks, there is no limit to what our Officially Amazing record holders can do!

Largest and deepest underwater weddings

Ewa Staronska and Pawel Burkowski (both Poland) had a very special wedding ceremony underwater in 2011. With the wedding lasting 18 minutes, the couple truly proved how compatible they are by communicating underwater using waterproof texts and sign language.

A little over 300 divers attended the ceremony and shared being a part of the largest wedding underwater. The wedding was organized by Orka Group Ltd (Poland) and Father Pawel Wrobel, a local priest, officiated it.

Ewa and Pawel weren’t the only couple who decided to do something different for their wedding though. Just two years later, in 2013, Hiroyuki Yoshida (Japan) and Sandra Smith (USA) got married in Song Hong Lake, Trang, Thailand. At a depth of 130 m (426 ft 6.1 in), the couple broke the record for the deepest underwater wedding

Largest underwater mermaid show

In a magical attempt, 110 professional mermaid performers broke the record for largest underwater mermaid show in Sanya, Hainan, China. It took a lot of effort behind the scenes to organize the beautiful show.

The attempt included challenges like communicating underwater and coordinating with so many professional performers. Not to mention, Atlantis Sanya — the ocean themed resort where the attempt took place — coordinated with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI).

The attempt was a mesmerizing one which brought attention to important issues like local tourism and marine culture. The professional mermaid performers truly made big waves!

Longest underwater walk with one breath (male and female)

Both Vitomir Maričić (Croatia) and Amber Bourke (Australia) hold the record for longest underwater walk with one breath. While Vitomir holds the record in the male category, Amber holds it in the female category.

In terms of the numbers though, Amber walked almost six metres more than Vitomir, at 112.83 m (370 ft 2 in). She is a competitive freediver and raised money for the Australian Marine Conservation Society through her record attempt.

Similarly, Vitomir holds multiple other diving records, including the deepest 10-person vertical human chain dive and return in apnea and most consecutive backward handsprings underwater holding a weight

First underwater hotel

In 1986, Jules’ Undersea Lodge opened as the first entirely underwater hotel in Key Largo, Florida. The only way guests can get to their room is by scuba diving!

While the underwater hotel in itself is an impressive development, it also serves a greater purpose. It serves as an artificial reef, providing shelter to marine animals. In fact, the hotel was first built as an undersea research library.

Naturally, Jules Undersea Lodge as hosted many famous people, including former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Aerosmith’s Steve Tyler.
