Sometimes, the secret to breaking records is to take the journey one step at a time — just like running a marathon!

That's a lesson athletes at the TCS London Marathon 2025 know all too well, as this year's edition of the long-distance event concluded with 41 new world records and 53 Guinness World Records title holders.

The day marked the 18th consecutive year of collaboration between the TCS London Marathon and Guinness World Records, as well as the 45th London Marathon: first established in 1981 and traditionally scheduled for April, the marathon has been part of the seven World Marathon Majors since 2006.

Soon, it became one of the most anticipated dates for marathon fans thanks to its friendly atmosphere and the fascinating, largely flat course.

This year, too, the partnership between the TCS London Marathon and Guinness World Records allowed athletes to test their skills and try to conquer a Guinness World Records certificate as they crossed the finish line.

In the morning, sports enthusiasts and elite athletes lined up on the start line, buzzing to tackle the 42-km-long course that spans around the River Thames, from Blackheath to The Mall.

Among them, 103 passionate runners had their hearts and minds set on a goal: going home with a record title and being included in the next Guinness World Records book.

From attention-grabbing costumes to traditional outfits, paying a heartfelt homage to the runners' heritage and traditions, the records being attempted this year included the fastest marathon dressed as a body part, the fastest marathon on crutches (male), and Angus Leckonby being the youngest person to complete a marathon (II1) (male), and in the fastest time EVER.

A total of 87 record titles were up for grabs during the day.

After collecting smiles, miles and record-setting results throughout the course, 41 records were set or broken at the end of the day.

Like every year, the big-hearted athletes used their record attempts as platforms to amplify their fundraising efforts to aid charitable causes close to their hearts.

Their eye-catching costumes helped them reach a wider audience, spreading the word of their record attempt and encouraging donations.

Other runners strived to make a difference, dedicating their race to battling prejudices and sending messages of strength, hope and inclusion.

Regardless of the result achieved at the end of an exhausting day, all runners have wholeheartedly embraced the challenge and proved that everything is possible with the right mindset and effort.

Guinness World Records Adjudicator Will Sinden congratulated the newly appointed record-breaking runners: "I have been adjudicating for a few years now, but today is my first time doing so at the TCS London Marathon. It’s been incredible to see so many successful attempts achieved today."

All of our 87 Guinness World Records attempts have been a display of true determination, and we are so happy to be able to award those that were successful not only the record title, but a place in the next edition of our book to share their achievement with the world. - Will

The day was packed with positive energy and brand-new record titles.

Records in fancy dresses were shattered from the early afternoon, with many runners sporting carefully crafted costumes or uncommon elements in their running gear.

The first record-setting athlete to cross the coveted finish line was Ethiopian long-distance runner Tigst Assefa, who smashed the record for the fastest marathon female (women-only race).

The elite runner achieved an incredible 2:15:50.

A result that surpassed the one achieved last year by fellow athlete Peres Jepchirchir, who finished at 2:16:16 during last year's London Marathon.

More record-breaking marathons followed soon after.

The first record in a fancy dress was smashed by Soh Rui Yong. Sharply dressed, the runner completed the 42-km course and broke the world record for the fastest marathon in a suit (male) in a little over two hours and 39 minutes.

Following closely, the second runner to cross the finish line was Tommy Trees.

The record-setting race marked the fastest marathon wearing foam clogs (male) with the remarkable time of 02:48:48.
