Coda Asano is a small but mighty Cocker Spaniel from Japan who loves wheeling around in search of an exciting adventure. In February 2024, on the set of our TV programme Lo Show dei Record, Coda broke a unique record that lived up to his daring spirit.

On a skateboard, Coda travelled through a human tunnel made up by 40 people standing with their legs split apart.

By breaking this adorable record, Coda carries on the legacy of Otto the Skateboarding Bulldog. Otto was first to set the record for the longest human tunnel travelled through by a dog on a skateboard. Back in 2015, the canine skateboarder wheeled underneath 30 people in Lima, Peru.

After setting the record, Otto used his fame to spread awareness about responsible pet ownership and actively promoted the adoption of homeless animals.

Coda’s owner, Satomi Asano, seems to hold a similar belief. She runs a dog school in Japan that prioritizes the wellbeing of animals and using scientific, positive reinforcement techniques for training.

Satomi told The Daily Mail that in Japan, it is common for trainers to punish dogs. She is trying to change that by training dogs like Coda ethically. She encouraged Coda to start skateboarding to play with him and keep him active.

Skateboarding has not only been Satomi and Coda’s claim to fame, but also an activity that strengthened their bond.

“With praising and teaching, he learned everything,” Satomi told the publication. “And our relationship has become better over time."

In August 2024, Coda also participated in a dog surfing contest near San Francisco, USA, which raised money for charities like the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Coda snagged the record from Dai Chun, who is also from Japan. Dai Chun travelled through a human tunnel of 32 people in August 2017 and 33 people in September 2017. Both Dai Chun and Coda broke their records on sets of TV shows.

Coda’s attempt to break the record was not smooth sailing though.

On his first attempt, he wasn’t able to pass through the tunnel. He wobbled a bit on his second attempt but ultimately made it through.

Coda has earned his rightful spot as a world-renowned skateboarding dog.
