Olly Alexander has been preparing for the Eurovision Song Contest by breaking a record inspired by his entry song.

The 33-year-old British singer and actor, who is representing the UK at this year’s contest in Sweden, took on a record-breaking challenge on kids’ TV show Blue Peter today.

With his song “Dizzy” in mind, Olly attempted the record for most objects caught whilst spinning on a chair in one minute, clinching the title with a total of 27.

Olly, who rose to fame as the lead singer of Years&Years, was given a helping hand by the show’s presenter Abby Cook, who threw the items for him to catch.

The It’s A Sin star had to spin a full 360 degrees in his chair before catching the objects Abby – who was two metres away - threw his way.

Olly vowed to Guinness World Records Adjudicator Joanne Brent that he’ll be hanging his certificate up in the loo at home.

On 11 May, Olly will be performing his song at the live Eurovision final.

Eurovision is the longest running annual TV music competition (international), being held every year since 1956, with the exception of 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic shut things down around the world.

Portuguese singer Salvador Sobral set the record for most points scored at Eurovision in 2017 with a huge 758 – 382 jury points and 376 from public votes.

Ireland and Sweden share the record for most wins of the Eurovision Song Contest by a country with seven each.

And the most wins of the Eurovision Song Contest by a performer is shared by Ireland’s Johnny Logan and Sweden’s Loreen, who are the only performers to each win the contest two times.

Blue Peter airs at 5 p.m. on Fridays on CBBC in the UK.
