Leo depositing coins in piggy bank

Leo, a two-year-old working cocker spaniel from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, loves counting cash.

The barking banker recently showed off his skills by breaking the world record for the most coins deposited into a piggy bank by a dog in one minute, with a total of 23.

The previous record of 18 was set in 2020 by serial-record-breaking dog Daiquiri, owned by Jennifer Fraser (Canada).

Emily Anderson, Leo’s loving owner, says that Leo “particularly enjoys tricks using his mouth.”

“I knew putting coins in a piggy bank is something he would really enjoy,” she added.

To prepare for the record attempt, Leo and Emily did two five-minute training sessions per day.

Although Leo loves performing mouth tricks, Emily does not always share the same level of excitement.

“The one downside to choosing the piggy bank challenge is the enormous amount of wet coins I’ve had to dry over the past few months,” she joked.

“They have to be dry, or they are harder for him to pick up, which slows him down considerably.”

Leo began his official record attempt at a fast pace – so fast that he accidentally knocked over the piggy bank after depositing the second coin!

However, he didn’t let that faze him, and after Emily picked up the piggy bank, Leo continued on without making any further mistakes.

After the 60 seconds concluded, Leo was confirmed to have beaten the previous record by a margin of five.

“Betty [the timekeeper] had the lovely job of tipping out all the wet coins and counting them,” Emily joked.

This record was first set in 2011 by a German dog named Pepper, with a total of seven. 12 years later, Leo has achieved over triple that number!

Pepper, owned by Claudia Neumann (Germany), originally set this record on the set of TV Total in Cologne, Germany, in celebration of Guinness World Records Day 2011

According to Emily, Leo “loves learning and doing tricks.”

In fact, Leo is an International Trick Dog Champion, certified by Do More With Your Dog!

In order to earn this accreditation, Leo was required to progress through the ranks by learning at least 15 ‘novice’ tricks, 12 ‘intermediate’ tricks, five ‘advanced’ tricks, and five ‘expert’ tricks.

Once Leo had achieved the rank of Expert Trick Dog, Emily recorded him performing a choreographed routine of his best tricks, which was sent to a panel of judges who officially declared Leo a Trick Dog Champion.

After adding a Guinness World Records title to his collection of accolades, Leo definitely deserves some extra pawket money!
