Valentines Day

Break out a box of chocolates and make sure to grab a bouquet of flowers while you can!

Valentine’s Day is this Friday and we’re showing you some of the most record-breaking displays of affection that have ever been achieved.

Longest Kiss

Valentines Day

And it wouldn't be Valentine's Day without a big ol' smooch. The longest kiss lasted 58 hours, 35 minutes and 58 seconds, achieved by Ekkachai Tiranarat and Laksana Tiranarat (both Thailand) at an event organized by Ripley's Believe It or Not! Pattaya, in Pattaya, Thailand, on 12-14 February 2013. Nine couples entered the annual competition, including a married couple in their 70s. However, it was previous record holders Ekkachai Tiranarat and Laksana Tiranarat who came out on top, scooping a cash prize and two diamond rings as well as another Guinness World Records title.

Largest Underwater Wedding

Valentines Day 2

The largest underwater wedding (above) was achieved by 303 divers who attended the marriage ceremony between Ewa Staronska and Pawel Burkowski (both Poland) during an event organized by Orka Group Ltd (Poland) at the Koparki Diving Base, Jaworzno, Poland, on 27 August 2011.

Longest Marriage

These land-lovers were married on terra firma, but Herbert Fisher (USA, b. 10 June 1905) and Zelmyra Fisher (USA, b. 10 December 1907) had their nuptials 13 May 13 1924 in North Carolina, USA. They had been married 86 years, 9 months, and 16 days as of 27 February 2011. Herbert Fisher sadly passed away that Sunday. The couple had 5 children.

Largest Box Of Chocolate

Valentines Day 3

The largest box of chocolates is a Thorntons Moments box weighing 3,725 lbs (1,689 kg). It was produced by Thorntons and Russell Beck Studios, and weighed in Bethnal Green, London, UK, on 2 April 2008. The box was 16 ft 6 in long, 11 ft 2 in wide and 3 ft 3 1/2 in deep.

Most people making bouquets simultaneously

Valentines day 7

You’re lucky if you can find a florist who isn’t overwhelmed on Valentine’s Day – but the town of Newport, New Hampshire, AKA “The Sunshine Town” made sure there was not shortage. The locals were looking for a unique way to revitalize its community by bringing the love and life back into the area as it once was.

In thinking of ways to accomplish this, they set out to attempt an official record title for the most people making bouquets simultaneously using sunflowers as a way to brighten up the Sunshine community. This wouldn’t be an easy endeavor though, and the first step would require planting sunflowers all throughout the area.

Using social platforms, earned media, as well as weekly newsletters to people around the state, attempt organizers encouraged residents to plant seeds across the town, followed by bringing their grown sunflowers months later to the first-ever “Newport Sunflower Festival” where the official record attempt would take place. People of all ages showed up to take part in this epic community event which brought everyone together to assemble beautiful flower bouquets in support of their beloved hometown.

First Known Heart Shaped Box Of Chocolate

Richard Cadbury (UK), the eldest son of John Cadbury, founder of the world famous company, created the first known heart-shaped box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day 1868. He was a pioneer in chocolate box design and often used his own paintings to make the lids of the boxes more appealing.

Oldest married couple (aggregate age)

Maybe if you and your sweetheart are lucky enough to grow old together, you too can achieve this record! John and Charlotte Henderson got hitched back in 1939, now 80 years later at the end of 2019 they're the oldest married couple in the world. The adorable couple met in a zoology class, where John sat behind Charlotte and began getting to know her. After some time, they both never went on another date again! They now have an aggregate age of 212 years 52 days, having been together since they were in their early 20s. Their advice for keeping a long and healthy marriage is “be good friends, and never go to bed at night angry with each other”.

Oldest Love Poem

The oldest surviving love poem is written on a clay tablet from the times of the Sumerians, inventors of writing around 3500 BD, and was given a very un-romantic name by archaeologists: 'Istanbul #2461'. Not quite Shakespeare. The author is unknown but is believed to have been recited by a bride of Sumerian king Shu-Sin, who ruled between 2037 and 2029 BC. The following is the start of the poem:

Bridegroom, dear to my heart,

Goodly is your beauty, honeysweet,

Lion, dear to my heart,

Goodly is your beauty, honeysweet.

Largest Chocolate Truffle

Valentines Day 4

Whether you are single or taken, who doesn’t love chocolate on Valentine’s Day? The largest chocolate truffle weighs 1,074.33 kg (2,368 lb 8 oz), and was achieved by Sweet Shop USA (USA) in Mount Pleasant, Texas, USA, on 21 April 2017. Sweet Shop USA is a family-owned chocolate manufacturer dedicated to preserving the craft of American handmade chocolates. They created the largest chocolate truffle based on their popular Milk Swiss Mint Truffle.

Most couples kissing under the mistletoe (single + multiple venue)

Valentines Day 8

In a world where most connections are made through our smart phones and social media, Anheuser-Busch decided to challenge people to connect with those they love in person during the 2019 holiday season. In December, the brand shattered two Guinness World Records titles for the most couples kissing under the mistletoe, in both the single and multiple venue categories! Three Anheuser-Busch properties across the nation – St. Louis, MO; Merrimack, NH; and Fort Collins, CO – brought together 896 couples for a magical holiday kiss which earned them the multiple venue record title by 57 couples.

Meanwhile in St. Louis, 480 couples gathered at the Biergarten and Tour Center to break the single venue title with the previous record set at 448. But that’s not all… At least one couple participating in the New Hampshire event took their relationship to the next level during the record attempt when a man proposed to his girlfriend and she said yes!

Longest underwater kiss (apnea)

Lots of kisses are shared on Valentine’s Day, and this one just happened to be shared underwater. The world’s longest underwater kiss in apnea was achieved by Michele Fucarino and Elisa Lazzarini (both Italy) on the set of Lo Show dei Record in Rome, Italy, on 18 March 2010. The couple went head to head against another couple (or should we say, smooch to smooch) and lasted an impressive 3 min 24 sec. Don’t try this at home!
