UK radio station BBC Radio 1 has been dedicated to playing the hits of the day for the past 47 years, but it was the station’s video service which recently helped it set a new world record.

Last week, Guinness World Records visited the station to present DJ’s Fearne Cotton and Greg James and station controller Ben Cooper with a certificate to mark the fact that on Sunday 19th January 2014, Radio 1 reached one million subscribers on its YouTube channel – making it the first radio station in the world to achieve this landmark.

Greg James said: “It’s really important that Radio 1 not only does really good radio stuff, but also does good videos too and to make sure that as many people as possible know about what we do.

“It’s pretty cool that Radio 1 has set a world record, and to appear in a book that I got every Christmas when I was a kid is very, very cool.”

Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief, Craig Glenday, said: “Radio has never been so vital, so vibrant and so relevant, as Radio 1’s record-breaking success on YouTube attests.

“Today’s audiences demand their media across all platforms, often simultaneously, and Radio 1 and 1Xtra is at the forefront of this revolution.

“It’s important for Guinness World Records that these new digital developments are reflected in the record books, so we’re more than happy to welcome Radio 1 into the family.”
