Imagine hugging over 1,100 trees in just one hour
0:03
Sounds impossible, right? Well, a Ghanian activist
has done just that, setting a new world record
0:09
Meet Abubakar Tahiru, a 29-year-old environmental
activist and forestry student from Ghana
0:16
Abubakar recently hugged 1,123 trees in one hour, averaging
almost 19 trees per minute, to set a new Guinness World Record
0:25
Growing up in a farming community in Tepper, Ghana, I
developed a deep love for nature and its conservation
0:33
This passion led me to pursue a degree in forestry. After completing
his undergraduate degree in Ghana, Abubakar moved to Alabama, USA
0:42
to pursue a master's degree in forestry at Auburn University. His
record attempt took place at Tuskegee National Forest in Alabama
0:50
For the record, a hug is defined as both arms
wrapped around a tree in a close embrace
0:56
No tree could be hugged more than once,
and no damage could be caused to any tree
1:00
The hardest part? Moving quickly between trees
while ensuring each hug met the required standards
1:06
And to make it even more challenging,
Abubakar was fasting for Ramadan
1:11
meaning he couldn't drink any water during the attempt. Not being
able to drink water was tough, especially with the physical exertion
1:18
But it also meant I didn't need to pause for water
breaks, allowing me to continue uninterrupted
1:25
Averaging one hug every three seconds, Abubakar
easily surpassed the minimum requirement
1:30
of 700 trees to become the first holder of this record.
Achieving this world record feels incredibly rewarding
1:38
It's a meaningful gesture to highlight
the crucial role of trees in our ecosystem
1:43
and the urgency of environmental conservation. Now Abubakar plans to
deepen his involvement in forestry by developing sustainable practices
1:52
and collaborating with environmental organizations to promote
sustainable projects. It's important to me to inspire the youth in Ghana
2:00
especially those from less privileged
communities like the one I grew up in
2:05
I want to show them that it's possible to rise
above challenges and make a significant impact
2:10
Abubakar Tahiru's achievement is a testament
to the power of passion and perseverance
2:16
Let's all take a moment to appreciate the trees
around us and the vital role they play in our world
2:20
Inspired by Abubakar's story, get involved
in environmental conservation today
