Well, we hope that our story inspires other
people to get out and do more with their dog
0:20
They're amazing, amazing athletic animals. They just
love to do more than take a ten minute walk every day
0:28
Never in a million years thought
Abby would be a surfing dog, right
0:33
And you never know what your dog
could be good at, unless you try
0:40
Try and find out what your dog's potential
is. Hi, I'm Michael and this is Abby
0:55
And Abby holds the Guinness World Records
title for longest wave surfed by a dog in
1:00
open water. And the record stands at 107 meters
1:10
The day I met Abby at the shelter I was
actually not even sure I wanted to adopt a dog
1:15
But I've been dealing with a lot of things. I walk down
to the shelter and all the dogs get really excited
1:21
One dog was not. She didn't jump up
on the window and bark or anything
1:26
She just kind of was sitting back in the
corner and she looked really depressed
1:31
But she kept staring at me. Every time
I walked by she'd just look at me
1:35
And so I identified with her and I was like,
oh, this dog doesn't think she belongs here
1:40
I know how that feels. So Abby and
I have a really good relationship
1:47
We do a lot of sports together. But when I first adopted her
she was pretty traumatized because they found her on the street
1:54
And so we started pretty gradually. We used to just
go to the beach and hang out and take walks together
2:01
And then she started to walk closer and closer
to me the more she trusted me and we started
2:06
bicycling together, going on hikes together, started rollerblading, and eventually
swimming. One day she just climbed onto somebody's surfboard and we pushed her in a wave
2:20
And that was her first wave. She rode it all the way into
the shore. We had been surfing for several years already
2:49
And when we started we just did it for fun. But it
turns out there are contests in Southern California
2:54
So we had won a lot of contests and somebody
said, gosh, what's the longest wave she's
2:59
ever ridden? And we had no idea. So I thought,
yeah, maybe it's just a couple meters or so
3:07
But when we tried for our
first title it was 60 meters
3:14
And then we tried for another one and it was 107 meters.
So we thought it would be a good way to make it official
3:24
Being part of this crazy crowd of people in
the Guinness World Records books and having
3:32
kind of this funny celebrity status,
it's been great. It's been a lot of fun
3:39
She's been the best thing that ever happened to me. You never
know what kind of animal you'll get when you rescue them
3:47
And some of them are just hidden surprises
waiting to happen, just like Abby
3:53
Who knows, if you rescue a dog, your dog could
have a Guinness World Record title someday
