Australians celebrate World Down Syndrome Day with drumming world record attempt

Hundreds of people got together in Melbourne, Australia on Tuesday to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day and attempt a new Guinness World Records title for the Most people drumming on Swiss balls simultaneously.

 

The 'Moverthon' event was organised by Australian charity e.motion21, which runs specialist dance and fitness classes for people with Down Syndrome.

 

Following weeks of preparation and rehearsal, over 300 people took part in the attempt.

 

Led by experienced Beat Fit™ instructors, the participants performed a choreographed routine combining dance, aerobics and drumming.

 

In order to achieve the Guinness World Records title, the group was required to play on their Swiss balls for a minimum of five minutes.

 

A final total of 289 participants successfully completed the attempt to set a new record.

 

 

Karina Posanzini, Chief Executive Officer at e.motion21 was thrilled with the outcome: “The record has helped e.motion21 highlight the capabilities that people with Down syndrome have, promote inclusion and to achieve recognition for their talents and skills.”

 

 

The attempt has already raised over $18,000(AUD), all of which will be used to give more young Australians with Down syndrome the chance to experience e.motion 21’s programs.
