Year in World Records - November: Basketball trick shots, parkour pros and GWR Day

With a year packed full of amazing world record achievements drawing to a close, Guinness World Records is taking a month-by-month look back over the most impressive, exciting and game-changing accomplishments that have happened in 2016.

November brings Thanksgiving in the US, Bonfire Night in the UK, Black Friday and, of course, the globally-celebrated Guinness World Records Day.

The most popular story of the month was the news that Australian YouTube stars How Ridiculous had absolutely smashed Dude Perfect’s record for the Greatest height from which a basketball is shot.

First achieving the title back in 2011 with a 66.89 m (219 ft 5 in) shot, the basketball fans went on to better their score twice – before American YouTubers Dude Perfect broke their record from a height of 162.458 m (533 ft) earlier this year.

Nevertheless, the How Ridiculous gang – consisting of Brett Stanford, Derek Herron and Scott Gaunson – were determined to win their title back:

Thousands of people from all over the globe once again came together to celebrate all things superlative during Guinness World Records Day.

Among the record breakers celebrating on November 17 werePaulo Gabriel da Silva Barros and Katyucia Lie Hoshino from Brazil after we announced the newlyweds as the Shortest married couple in the world.

The pair have a combined height of just 181.41 cm (71.42 in), and set the record after tying the knot back in September.

On 29 November Ms Emma Martina Luigia Morano of Vercelli, Italy turned 117 years old – extending her record for being the Oldest living person.

Speaking of Emma's achievement, Marco Frigatti, Head of Records for GWR, said: “The oldest living person record category continues to capture the world’s collective imagination. Ms Morano has experienced things first hand that will soon be consigned to memory, and the record books. She can teach us all a lesson of the value of a life well lived.”

Another impressive longevity record was achieved by Iowa-born Peggy Whitson who became the Oldest astronaut (female).

The veteran spacewoman achieved this title at the remarkable age of 56 years and 282 days, aboard a Soyuz MS-03 spacecraft headed towards the International Space Station (ISS) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

And on a different note, we saw Italy’s David Fanelli and Germany’s Amadei Weiland smash the record for the Highest wall-assisted backflip.

Both challengers were able to complete a jaw-dropping 3.40 metres (11 ft 1.86 in) high backflip and land stably on the ground.

This was an episode of Guinness World Records Italian Show and the video has since clocked up over two million views on YouTube.
