Four-time Super Bowl champion Adam Vinatieri made another piece of American football history on Friday after setting an incredible field goal record ahead of Sunday's Super Bowl.

As part of the NFL Extra Points Charity Kick, which took place in Houston,Texas (USA), the host state of this year’s highly anticipated football game, the Indianapolis Colts star set a new record title for Most American Football field goals made in one minute.

While the veteran kicker has been used to high pressure moments throughout his career, there was plenty riding on Vinatieri's attempt, with Barclaycard announcing they would award 1.5 million NFL Extra Points (equivalent to $15,000) to the Pat Tillman Foundation if he managed to succeed in kicking at least 20 American footballs through the field goal from the 17 yards - all within a sixty second time limit.

With his former teammate Pat McAfee serving as his holder. Vinatieri's fantastic athleticism prevailed, with 44-year-old attaining an impressive total of 28 field goals.

Official adjudicator Michael Empric was on site to verify the attempt and present Adam with a Guinness World Records certificate, validating his extraordinary achievement.

“This is pretty great, isn’t it?” Vinatieri told USA TODAY Sports after setting the record. “Growing up, you would always hear about all these records, and people getting their name in there."

Speaking while still out of breath moments after the successful attempt, the former New England Patriots star admitted it had been a tough challenge.

“It’s like running a 400,” the NFL’s current oldest player explained. “The first 200 doesn’t hurt you. The last 200 kicks your butt.”

The Pat Tillman Foundation takes its name from of the former NFL player who put his NFL career on hold to serve in the military following the American tragedy of 9/11.

After Tillman’s death in April 2004 while serving with the 75th Ranger Regiment in Afghanistan, his friends and family created the Foundation to honour his legacy of leadership and service.

The Foundation invests in military veterans and their spouses through academic scholarships, building a diverse community of leaders committed to serving others.

This year marks the sixth-annual NFL Extra Points Charity Kick, hosted by NFL Extra Points Credit Card issued by Barclaycard, going the extra mile by earning a new record title for the organization.

“Teaming up with the NFL Extra Points Credit Card and Indianapolis Colts placekicker Adam Vinatieri for the annual Charity Kick is an honor, as it supports veterans and their spouses at a critical time during their transition out of the military,” said Marie Tillman, president and co-founder, Pat Tillman Foundation. “Every point donated by the NFL Extra Points Credit Card and Barclaycard will empower Tillman Scholars as leaders to serve our country and communities in new ways out of uniform.”
