The Aussies have showed us how they celebrate Christmas down under today, with experience gift retailer RedBalloon organising a successful attempt at the Largest surfing lesson – and inviting everyone to dress up as Santa Claus.

The brand had to round up a minimum of 250 surfers to set the record, but an impressive 320 locals got into the festive spirit and took part in the 30 minute lesson on Bondi Beach, leaving as new Guinness World Records title holders.

The masterclass was led by instructors from “Let’s Go Surfing” and included both on-shore instruction and practice in the water.

The weather conditions were perfect and plenty of beginners managed to get up on their surfboards.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Solvej Malouf was on hand to congratulate the huge group of Father Christmases and present the organisers with an official certificate, in front of a crowd of spectators and the media.

CEO of RedBalloon Nick Baker spoke after the successful attempt: “Surfing in December truly highlight the Australian summer Christmas. We were really excited to work with ‘Let’s Go Surfing’ and Bondi locals to break this record and to share an unforgettable RedBalloon experience with all 320 who participated. Today was a great example of what RedBalloon stands for at Christmas – that the best gifts cannot be wrapped.”

The event also aimed to raise awareness about mental health issues and RedBalloon donated $2,500 to surfing charity “One Wave”.
