The record for the world’s Largest skinny dipping has been achieved by 2,505 women who have attended a ‘Strip and Dip’ event on Meaghermore beach in Wicklow, Ireland.

They broke the record previously held by The Fig Group (Australia), who had 786 people take part in their event at South Beach in Perth, Australia, in 2015.

The women who participated in the ‘Strip and Dip’ on Saturday 9 June braved the cold water to raise money for Aoibheann’s Pink Tie, an Irish children’s cancer charity.

More than €160,000 was raised by the women, who hailed from every single county in Ireland as well as 22 other countries.

The event was organised by Deirdre Featherstone, a cancer survivor who created the ‘Strip and Dip’ event and has been running it for the past six years.

Deirdre Featherstone was undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and decided after her mastectomy to start raising money for children suffering from cancer and their families.

Earning the Largest skinny dipping record has shown just how much Deirdre’s event has grown since the beginning.

In its first year, the ‘Strip and Dip’ had just 80 women participating, and now has over 30 times that amount in its sixth year.

Michelle Neary, a women who participated in the event, shared on Facebook how much it meant to her.

"Myself and my lovely sister did the dip for the first time yesterday. I felt so honoured and proud to be among such beautiful, courageous, inspirational women. I am still buzzing today, the positive energy and vibes as we all walked down to the beach was emotional and fantastic. So proud to have been a part of it. Definitely back next year. Aren't women just amazing," ‎Michelle Neary‎, participant.

The events have raised €313,000 to date for charity Aoibheann’s Pink Tie.

Most of the women participating have had someone close to them affected by cancer, or are themselves cancer survivors.

The ladies stayed submerged in the water for a chilly five minutes before seeking sanctuary in their beach towels.

Adjudicator Lucia Sinigagliesi remarked on the great atmosphere of the event and the dedication of the women involved.

“The women came in great spirit, all with wigs and colourful head outfits. It was fantastic!”
