Guinness World Records can today confirm that Jim Furyk's historic 58 notched up at the TPC at River Highlands in Connecticut yesterday has been recognised as a new record for the Lowest single round score (18 holes) in the golf PGA Championships.

The  46-year-old American's incredible performance during the the Traveler’s Championship tournament saw him register a total of 10 birdies and an eagle to shoot a 12-under-par round.

The achievement also sees Furyk become the only golfer to have broken 60 twice during official PGA Tour events, having done so prior at the 2013 BMW Championship.

Pennsylvania-born star was not only accurate, but also swift; as he finished the course before the final pair could tee-off.

Along the course, he hit every green within regulations and needed only 24 putts along to way his achieving benchmark-setting score.

The professional golfer accomplished this record after being sidelined for nine months with wrist injury, which required surgical treatment.

Talking to Sky Sports after his history-making round, Furyk said: "It's pretty cool. "A million and a half rounds played in the history of the PGA Tour and you look at the great names ahead of me. It's humbling - to stand alone at 58 is really a cool accomplishment. "I never thought I'd have the opportunity to shoot 59 so once we accomplished that goal I said, 'I had my one chance, I was able to go ahead and birdie the last hole and do it, it'll probably never happen again', and lo and behold, I made the turn today and said, 'Here we go again'. "It's fun to break that barrier and be the first one."

Despite his efforts and incredible score, it was not enough to win him the tournament, with Furyk finishing fifth, trailing fellow golfer Daniel Berger by four strokes.

Win or lose, Jim Furyk still leaves the PGA Championships with enormous respect, worldly credentials, and a striking new record title that takes a mark in golfing history.
