Breast cancer research has come a long way in recent years, thanks in no small part to the countless awareness and charitable campaigns that regularly happen around the globe.

It nevertheless remains one of the most widespread cancers amongst women, meaning such events and initiatives continue to be as important as ever in the battle to improve the odds of survival.

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, here below we shine the spotlight on five successful Guinness World Records title attempts that were dedicated to raising awareness and finding an eventual cure for the disease.

Most landmarks illuminated in 24 hours

The colour pink has long been associated with the campaign to raise awareness for breast cancer issues, but how about making iconic buildings such as the Burj Al Arab, Tokyo Tower, and Taj Mahal Palace glow in the same shade? In a global statement for their annual Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, cosmetic company Estee Lauder set the world title for Most landmarks illuminated in 2010. It began in Australia with Federation Square in Melbourne and made its way to the grand Empire State Building in New York City, USA. With such epochal buildings irradiated in shocking pink, the company achieved the world record at 38 landmarks while also making a beautiful statement around the world.

Largest Bra

This record was set on the ITV tower at London’s South Bank in 2011, during a broadcast of the TV channel's This Morning show. Made by Reckitt Benckiser and Vanish, the bust measurement totalled 29.6 m (97 ft 1.35 inches) and was calculated before being hung on the side of the building. With its electrifying pink color and size, it was truly hard to ignore the powerful message it represented for breast cancer awareness.

Most live concerts in 12 hours (multiple towns)

You may have seen Hispanic songstress Ruth Lorenzo from the 2008 series of the British Talent Show ‘The X Factor’. Earlier this month Ruth used her vocal talents to raise money for breast cancer research during a bid for the Most live concerts in 12 hours (multiple towns) world record. Across eight cities in Spain, Lorenzo performed an incredible eight full shows as part of a campaign headed-up by popular Spanish radio station Cadena 100, alongside Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer. With pink accents throughout the stage and audience, Lorenzo earned the record while also rallying for charity.

Largest T-Shirt

Staying with the pink theme, Brazilian group Equilíbrios Camisetas Promocionais, created the world’s Largest T-Shirt back in 2014. Measuring in at 93.2 m (305 ft 9.28 in) long by 62.73 m (205 ft 9.68 in) wide, and weighing an astonishing 4,500 kg (9,920 lb), it was unveiled in Navegantes, Santa Catarina, Brazil, in the southeastern portion of the country. Equilíbrios built the shirt in partnership with the RFCC (Female Network Against Cancer) of Brazil. The super-sized item of clothing was made from recycled materials and was later transformed into 10,000 conventional t-shirts in a numbered, limited series for sale, with proceeds from sales going to the RFCC.
